Modal, Lyocell and Viscose Yarn — Cellulosic Fibres

Lyocell, modal and viscose are regenerated fibres made from wood cellulose; compared with cotton they give a cooler, smoother and softer handle. In our own knitting we use 100% lyocell and lyocell/cotton, modal/cotton and lyocell/linen yarns; 100% modal, viscose and bamboo viscose yarn we supply from our partner spinners.

01 Fibre Differences

Lyocell, Modal, Viscose and Bamboo — the Difference

All three are made by dissolving cellulose and regenerating it into fibre; the process makes the difference. Lyocell is produced in a closed-loop process in which most of the solvent is recovered; it has high strength and good moisture management. Modal is a type of viscose with higher wet strength and keeps its shape better in washing. Viscose is the most common and economical member of the family.

Almost all yarn sold as “bamboo yarn” is viscose made from bamboo cellulose; under EU textile labelling the fibre name is “viscose”. If a branded lyocell (e.g. TENCEL™) is required, the brand licence and document chain are clarified separately in the quotation.

FAQ

Modal, Lyocell and Viscose — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between lyocell and modal?

Both are regenerated fibres made from wood cellulose. Lyocell is produced in a closed-loop process in which most of the solvent is recovered, and has high strength. Modal belongs to the viscose family with high wet strength; it is known above all for its softness and shape retention in washing.

Is bamboo yarn really bamboo?

Almost all products sold as “bamboo yarn” are viscose made from bamboo cellulose. Under EU textile labelling the fibre name is “viscose”; bamboo may only be mentioned as the source of the raw material. We supply bamboo viscose yarn from our partner spinners on request.

Which cellulosic yarns do you use in your own production?

In our own knitting we use 100% lyocell (Ne 30/1), lyocell/cotton 50/50 (Ne 26/1–30/1), lyocell/linen 80/20 (Ne 30/1) and modal/cotton 50/50 (Ne 28/1–30/1).
