Cotton Yarn — Combed, Open-End and Melange

Most of our jersey bedding and fitted sheets are knitted from combed cotton yarn. We supply the combed (Ne 20/1–40/1), open-end (Ne 28/1–30/1) and melange cotton yarns we knit ourselves — and other qualities such as compact and carded from our partner spinners — with a sample cone and a lot test report.

01 Spinning Systems

Combed, Carded, Compact and Open-End — the Difference

In carded yarn the cotton passes through the card and most short fibres stay in the yarn; it is more economical but hairier and less even. Combed yarn additionally goes through a comber that removes short fibres and neps, so the yarn is more even, more lustrous and less hairy — which is why it is preferred for jersey bedding.

Compact yarn condenses the fibres during ring spinning to reduce hairiness, improving strength and surface smoothness. Open-end (rotor) yarn is spun directly from sliver in a rotor; it is bulkier and more economical, usually used in medium to coarse counts, and its strength is lower than ring yarn.

03

Which Cotton Yarn for Jersey?

For skin-contact jersey products such as bedding and fitted sheets, combed Ne 28/1–30/1 is the most common choice for softness and surface evenness. Ne 36/1–40/1 gives a lighter, finer handle; open-end Ne 28/1–30/1 a fuller, more economical construction. Share your fabric weight and washing requirements and we will choose the right count together.

FAQ

Cotton Yarn — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between combed and open-end yarn?

Combed yarn is ring-spun from cotton that has been combed to remove short fibres and neps; it is even, lustrous and low in hairiness. Open-end yarn is spun directly from sliver in a rotor; it is bulkier and more economical, but its strength and surface evenness are lower than combed yarn.

What does 30/1 combed mean?

30/1 means English cotton count Ne 30, single ply; it corresponds to about 19.7 tex (Nm 50.8). Combed means the yarn is spun from combed cotton. It is one of the most common counts for jersey bedding and single jersey fabric.

Which cotton yarn counts can you supply?

In our own knitting we use combed Ne 20/1, 26/1, 28/1, 30/1, 36/1 and 40/1 and open-end Ne 28/1 and 30/1. Compact, carded ring, plied yarn and other counts are supplied on request from our partner spinners.
