Jersey Sheets Guide: What They Are, What They’re Made Of & How They Compare

Jersey sheets feel like your favorite T-shirt: soft, stretchy and ready to use straight from the dryer — no ironing. But is jersey actually cotton? And how does it compare to classic woven cotton or percale? As a knit fabric manufacturer producing jersey sheets since 1965, here is everything we know, in plain language.

What Is a Jersey Sheet?

A jersey sheet is a bed sheet made from knitted fabric instead of woven fabric. In knitting, a single yarn is looped row by row — the same construction used for T-shirts. Those loops are why jersey stretches naturally, drapes softly over the mattress and resists wrinkling.

Woven sheets (percale, sateen) are made on looms where vertical and horizontal yarns cross at right angles. That produces a flatter, crisper, non-stretch fabric. Neither construction is “wrong” — they simply behave differently on the bed.

What Are Jersey Sheets Made Of?

Most quality jersey sheets are made of 100% cotton. The fiber is spun into yarn — ringspun and combed (penye) yarns give the smoothest result — and then knitted into single-jersey fabric. You will also find:

  • Cotton-elastane blends (95/5): extra stretch and shape recovery, common in fitted sheets.
  • Cotton-polyester blends: cheaper and faster-drying, but less breathable and prone to pilling.
  • Organic cotton jersey: GOTS-certified cotton, identical construction, certified fiber origin.

Quality is decided less by the label and more by yarn and knitting density: ringspun combed cotton at 130–160 gsm, knitted tightly, will outlast loosely knitted open-end yarn every time.

Jersey Cotton vs Cotton: What’s Actually the Difference?

This is the most common confusion, so let’s be precise: jersey is not a fiber — it’s a fabric construction. Cotton is the raw material; jersey is what you do with it. So “jersey cotton vs cotton” really means knitted cotton vs woven cotton:

  • Feel: jersey is soft and broken-in from the first night; woven cotton starts crisp and softens over months.
  • Stretch: jersey stretches 20–30% naturally; woven cotton barely stretches at all.
  • Wrinkles: jersey is wrinkle-resistant and needs no ironing; woven cotton creases and usually wants pressing.
  • Fit: jersey fitted sheets hug the mattress and stay put; woven fitted sheets depend entirely on elastic quality.

Percale vs Jersey: Which Should You Choose?

Percale is the classic crisp hotel sheet — a tight plain weave, matte finish, cool to the touch. Jersey is its relaxed opposite. Here is the honest comparison:

Property Jersey (Knit) Percale (Woven)
FeelSoft, T-shirt-like from day oneCrisp, cool, hotel-style
IroningNever neededUsually needed for a smooth look
StretchNatural 20–30% stretchNone
Sleep temperatureWarm-neutral; light jersey sleeps coolCoolest option
Durability150+ industrial washes (hospitality grade)High, with proper care
Housekeeping cost (hotels)Lower — no ironing stepHigher — pressing required

Choose percale if you sleep hot and love a crisp, freshly-pressed feel. Choose jersey if softness, easy care and a snug fitted sheet matter more — or, for hotels, if you want to remove ironing from the laundry cycle entirely.

So… Is Jersey Better Than Cotton?

Trick question — quality jersey is cotton. The real question is whether knitted cotton suits you better than woven cotton:

  • For homes: jersey wins on softness, zero ironing and fitted-sheet grip; percale wins on crispness and the coolest sleep.
  • For hotels & rentals: jersey reduces labor — sheets go from industrial dryer to bed with no pressing, and a quality knit survives 150+ industrial wash cycles.
  • For sensitive skin: GOTS or OEKO-TEX certified cotton jersey avoids harmful residues regardless of construction.
